What are the requirements to apply for the scholarship ?
The applicant must have a female student, with a cumulative grade point average of 85 or higher to qualify for the scholarship; live in one of the four counties: Orange, Dutchess, Ulster or Putnam.
When is the application due?
The application and all supporting documents MUST BE received or post-marked by April 6, 2020. The supporting documents include:
- One letter of recommendation from teacher, counselor or community leader
- Official transcript (must have the school seal or in sealed envelope)
Who should write my letter of recommendation?
The letter of recommendation should be written by a teacher/guidance counselor or community leader that can speak to your academic and/or community involvement.
What are some examples of honors or awards that will meet the criteria for the application?
Academic honors include national honor society, subject awards ( i.e. science awards or math awards), recognitions for academic achievement. Other awards that will meet the criteria are community service awards or athletic awards (student-athlete awards, leadership awards)
Why is Financial Information Requested?
The committee will use this information in deciding scholarship amount. Please make sure all information is accurate. The committee reserves the right to verify information submitted in the application. An applicant may be disqualified if any information in the application is not factual.
When should I expect to be notified about scholarship award?
Applicants will be notified by email the week of April 13th that application is received and informed if all supporting documents were received. The week of April 20th selected applicants will be invited for interview the week of April 27th. An In-person interview is required to be considered for a scholarship. The location of the interview will be in either in Orange County or Dutchess County. The notification of awards will occur the week of May 11th and the award ceremony with be on June 27th .
How should I prepare for the interview?
Applicants should arrive 15 minutes prior the time of interview. Business attire is required. Business attire include the following: Skirt (knee length) or pants suit with shoes ( no sandals or flip flops). Tops should be business apparel (no cut out sleeves or low-cut shirts). A cardigan sweater is permissible in lieu of a blazer or jacket. The interview is a time to highlight yourself and to share with the committee your strengths and what makes you unique from the other applicants. Spend some time with a friend, teacher or parent and. Practice responding to interview questions.
What are some tips to be a competitive candidate for the scholarship award?
Ensure that your application is legible and complete. Type application is preferred. Have a teacher or parent review your application before submitting. Proof-read your essay or have a teacher or parent to ensure it is grammatically correct. Do not use slang in your essay. Use additional sheets to include additional awards or honors if the section is not large enough to include all activities and recognition. Make sure the email address that is provided is legible and one that the applicant checks regularly. Notifications will be primarily be email.
