Mid-Hudson Valley Alumnae Chapter in Action
The Mid-Hudson Valley Alumnae Chapter strives to provide different resources to the Mid-Hudson Valley on New York. From children to elders, we support our community with an array of different programs and events.
Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy
Monthly tutoring and mentoring program for girls ages 11 to 14 years old. This program is held at Poughkeepsie Middle School. The emphasis of the program is on Math, Science and Technology and helps to improve the self-esteem of participants.
Biennial Jabberwock Cotillion
One of our most popular events, the Debutante Cotillion was created with our young women in mind. The Debutante Cotillion provides monthly workshops on personal care, self-esteem, education, college prep/careers and other topics enabling the debutantes to grow. The workshops culminate with the cotillion, which raises money for our annual scholarships.
Annually the chapter offers scholarships to African-American female high school seniors in the Mid-Hudson Valley area. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic achievement, community and school involvement.
Held annually in March, this educational program focuses on providing the community with information on the prevention, transmission, care and concern for those living with the disease. Past activities have included delivering meals to persons homebound with A.I.D.S.
Health Fair/Diabetes Awareness
The focus of this program is on the youth and the rising number of children diagnosed with diabetes. The program included healthy eating/healthy lifestyle tips, exercise information, demonstrations, speakers, etc.
Members regularly provide test-taking preparation for students taking statewide exams.
Annual celebration provided to the community, showcases the talents of Delta Academy participants and other community members. A meal is provided for all who attend.
Held in the fall, the members work together to purchase, cook and serve meals to the community at the Soup Kitchen held at Beulah Baptist Church in Poughkeepsie, NY.
